I had another good run in with someone today when I stopped to grab something to eat and take a break. As usual the back pack seems to invite questions which is great because there is enough time during the day where I don't get to talk to anyone.
He asks "Are those ski poles?" (again) and "Where you going with em?". So I tell him I am going camping and I use the trekking poles when I am back packing. During the next few minutes I explained to him that I was carrying all my gear that I needed with me in my back pack to camp with. He seemed a little skeptical and maybe a little impressed that you could do such a thing.
So the questions continued on and he noticed my GPS and asked if I had one of those "beacon things" on it. After he explained to me that he basically meant a GPS locator that the police can find you in few minutes with I was on board. By this point I had a feeling he was an ex-con so I said yes it has a beacon. It doesn't. I explained all the great imaginary tracking and reporting features my "beacon thing" had. I do have a beacon thing it's just not my GPS. It is no where near as cool as the device I came up with either. My imaginary device I'm sure would go good in the new "Iron Man" movie attached to his suit.
I did have a couple twinges of guilt at giving him such bad info on what the technology can do but the question felt a little off to me the way he asked it.. so it was Iron Man away.. Now before I get emails from people upset with me for this. I have worked in a maximum security prison before and with some people you just get a vibe from them that they have been locked up. Just sometimes, some people. After talking to the guy for awhile it turned out that he had been locked up twice, sentenced to twenty two years altogether. I don't know how long he did or what he did, I didn't bother to ask. And no, just because he had been in prison doesn't mean he was up to no good, my spidey sense was just tingling.
So we keep talking for awhile and he says I need to be careful out there, never know what might happen, that kind of thing. There was a break in conversation and then he says "they need to bring back capitalism." Topics had also meandered around some so I wasn't sure exactly what he was talking about again. He says "If they brought back capitalism people would be afraid of doing things." I was thinking capitalism seems to still be around, not sure why they need to bring it back and people have been pretty afraid of all the things capitalism has done for almost a decade now...
Turns out he meant bring back capital punishment.. He went into why there should be capital punishment, the supposed reasons like it deters crime. That started to seem to build up to a little rant how Muslims run all the food in prison and they get special food and you get four pieces of bread at every meal. It probably would have gotten more entertaining but I figured I would head off the rant and head back on my way at that point.
