I headed out on Friday and the conditions were rough. It had rained the night before and then the sun came out hot and it was hot and muggy. After the end of the day I re-thought my packing and stopped at a post office on the way the next day and mailed things back home. Being able to carry seventy pounds and being able to carry seventy pounds for long periods of time are different things. I figured eventually I would end up losing that battle. The weight would stay the same on heavy load times but eventually I would wear out. So I took care of the weight issue sooner than later.
With removing things I am adjusting what I was planning. I knew I would be making adjustments so I at least expected it. Video's are gone, I decided I didn't want to carry the weight. So I may not be interviewing people myself (I will do the radio stops on my way), frankly I can already see how trying to do everything involved with that would be very hard while working with limited resources. So video is out, radio is in. I sent back the solar chargers also so I will need to watch my battery and charge up places that I can. I am going to be packing a lot less food and getting more frequent re-supplies.
Where I was pretty bare bones before I am probably down to about forty pounds now. Med-kit, safety equipment, hygiene, couple changes of clothes, tent, sleeping bag, water and some food. That's about it, not much more that that. I didn't get rid of any med-kit or safety equipment those I considered absolutely must haves.
When it comes down to it I am actually not out of anything, I just have less of it.
